Bouba Savage werd in Guinee geboren als Boubacar Diallo. Zijn vader emigreerde zo'n dertig jaar geleden vanuit Guinee naar de VS voor een beter leven. Hij werkt in New York als taxichauffeur. Bouba Savage bracht de eerste negen jaar van zijn leven door in Guinee. Over die tijd vertelt hij: "Ik rende rond zonder schoenen en we haalden water uit de put." Zijn vader deed veel moeite om hem samen met zijn zusjes en zijn broer naar New York toe te halen. Tot de dag van vandaag zit zijn moeder nog steeds in Guinee. Hij heeft haar sinds zijn vertrek niet meer gezien. "Ik ga haar hopelijk volgend jaar opzoeken in Guinee en ik probeer haar ook naar de VS te halen."

Bouba's reis naar een beter leven werd realiteit. "Voor mensen als mij is dit een zegen. Het is niet vanzelfsprekend dat iemand in mijn positie de mogelijkheid krijgt op een leven met meer kansen, dus ik ben daar heel dankbaar voor. Ik moet het maken in het leven en ik wil mooie dingen doen voor mijn mensen in Afrika." Er is geen greintje twijfel te bespeuren in zijn woorden. Aan alles is te merken dat dit voor hem het ultieme doel is.

Na een lange vliegreis, kwam Bouba Savage uiteindelijk terecht in The Bronx. Het was een enorme verandering voor de negenjarige Boubacar: "In het begin sprak ik helemaal geen Engels. Ik kon niet eens 'hallo' zeggen tegen iemand. Op school werd ik ook uitgelachen omdat ik Afrikaans was en de taal niet beheerste. Eerst dacht ik dat ze me leuk vonden, maar later kwam ik achter de werkelijke intentie." Nu beschouwt hij The Bronx als zijn thuis. "Je hebt goede mensen hier, slechte mensen en gevaarlijke mensen. Het is belangrijk dat je hier op je hoede bent."

Na zijn eerste muziekvideo 'Ima Savage', begon het balletje te rollen. Hij werd bekend met het eerste nummer dat hij ooit had uitgebracht. "In die tijd probeerde ik mijn muziek te verbergen voor mijn vader. Ik dacht dat hij boos zou worden op het moment dat hij wist dat ik rapte. Uiteindelijk kwam hij er toch achter doordat ik steeds bekender werd. Die clip ontplofte destijds. Ook mijn moeder weet nu dat ik muziek maak en daar bekend mee ben geworden. Mensen in Guinee komen zelfs naar mijn moeder toe omdat ik haar zoon ben. Mijn beide ouders zijn erg trots op me."

Op dit moment maakt Bouba - nadat hij nummers zoals 'Kidnap Who', 'Wanna Hate' en 'Mentioning Me' uitbracht - zich op voor de release van zijn debuutalbum 'It's Amazing': zijn favoriete slogan die vaak fungeert als ad lib in zijn nummers. Het album komt in juni uit en er zullen vier featurings op staan. Nadat hem de vraag wordt gesteld welke featurings we kunnen verwachten houdt Bouba Savage de kaken stijf op elkaar. Na lang aandringen is hij bereid om toch een tipje van de sluier te geven: wijlen Lil Keed zal staan op het aankomende album.

Bij het zijn van een ster hoort natuurlijk ook het geld. Bouba Savage verdient momenteel een stuk meer dan zijn gemiddelde leeftijdsgenoot terwijl hij als kind snoep verkocht in Guinee om te kunnen overleven. Hij weet dan ook als geen ander dat er ook een keerzijde is. "Ik geef mijn geld niet uit aan domme dingen. Daarom kan ik mijn familie in Guinee steunen want zij hebben de hulp hard nodig. Op een dag ben ik de rijkste persoon op aarde en dan kan ik mijn hele community helpen en mooie dingen voor ze doen."

Op de vraag of hij nog op school zit antwoordt hij: "hell yeah! I don't wanna be no dropout! School en muziek houden mij op het rechte pad. Ik wil niet die jongen worden die twintig jaar de cel in moet. Ik wil de jongen zijn waar iedereen naar opkijkt." Bouba Savage beseft dat hij de gouden wikkel in zijn hand heeft. "Uiteindelijk heb ik de kans om heel veel mensen te inspireren en die kans laat ik niet lopen. Mijn grootste doel is om terug te gaan naar Afrika om daar iets groots op te bouwen. Ik wil dat de mensen daar stromend water hebben door mij."

Bouba Savage was born in Guinea by the name of Boubacar Diallo. His father emigrated from Guinea to the United States about thirty years ago for better opportunities for his family. He currently works as a taxi driver in New York. Bouba Savage spent the first nine years of his life in Guinea. When asked about what he remembers from his time there, he answered: "I used to run around without shoes and we got water from the well." Bouba’s dad put a lot of effort into bringing him to New York along with his brother and sisters. To this day, his mother still lives in Guinea. He hasn’t seen her since he left the country. “Hopefully I will visit her in Guinea next year. We’re trying to get her to the US as well.”

Bouba’s path to a brighter future became a reality. "For people like me this is a blessing. It is not a given that someone in my position has access to a better life with better opportunities. So that’s something I am extremely grateful for. I have to make it in life and I want to do good things for my people in Africa." There is not an ounce of doubt in his words. It is extremely clear that this is the ultimate goal for him.

After a long plane ride, Bouba Savage finally ended up in the Bronx. It was a huge change for nine-year-old Boubacar: “At first, I didn’t speak English at all. I couldn’t even say ‘hello’ to anyone. At school I was also laughed at for being African and not speaking the language. At first, I thought they liked me, but I found out later what their real intentions were.” Now he considers the Bronx his home. “You have good people here, bad people and dangerous people. It’s important to stay cautious around here.”

After the release of his first music video ‘Ima Savage’, things started moving for Bouba. He became famous off of his first song. “At the time, I was trying to hide my music from my father. I thought he would get mad the moment he found out I was rapping. Eventually he did find out because I was getting more and more famous. That clip exploded at the time. Now my mother also knows that I make music and became famous because of the music. People in Guinea even go to my mother because they know I am her son. Both my parents are very proud of me.”

Currently, Bouba – after having released the songs “Kidnap Who”, “Wanna Hate” and “Mentioning Me” – is gearing up for the release of his debut album, “It’s Amazing”: his favorite catchphrase that he often uses as ad lib in his songs. The album will be released in June and will have four featurings. When asked which artists will be featured on the album, Bouba Savage keeps his lips sealed. After a lot of persuasion, he reveals just one of the features: the late Lil Keed.

Of course, with being a star also comes the financial benefits. Bouba Savage currently earns a lot more than the average kid his age, even though he sold candy as a child in Guinea to be able to survive. As such, he knows better than anyone else that there is also a downside. “I don’t spend money on stupid things. That’s how I’m able to support my family in Guinea. They desperately need the help. One day I’ll be the richest person on earth and I’ll be able to help my entire community and do good by them.”

When asked if he is still in school, he replies: “hell yeah! I don’t wanna be no dropout! School and music keep me on the straight and narrow. I don’t want to be that guy who has to go to jail for twenty years. I want to be the boy that everyone looks up to.” Bouba Savage realizes he has the golden ticket in his hand. “At the end of the day, I have the opportunity to inspire a lot of people and I’m not going to let that opportunity pass. My biggest goal is to go back to Africa to build something great there. I want the people there to have running water because of me.”
